As you can tell from the weather the cross country season isn’t far off.  The Club competes in two local leagues, the Mid Lancs and the Red Rose.

The Mid Lancs is the main league and full details are on http://www.midlancs.org.uk/.  Athletes can enter on the day and there is no charge (the Club pays to join the league).  We aim to get Club teams in as many age groups as possible.

The other league is the Red Rose which we joined for the first time last year details on http://www.redrosecrosscountry.co.uk/.  This league runs from October to December and caters for ages 8 upwards.

Please put the dates in your diaries and ask Paul, Noel or Christine if you need further information.

Cross country is great fun but the weather can be poor and it will almost certainly be muddy.  If you go well equipped (both athletes and supporters) it makes all of the difference.

Athletes need cross country spikes which can be bought from the Complete Runner in Nelson, alternatively studded fell shoes will suffice (some school cross countries have road sections in which case fell shoes are best); spectators need wellies.  For runners gloves, hat and thermal vest under your club vest will all be needed on occasions.  In bad weather I wear running tights instead of shorts.  Make sure that you have some dry clothes, especially a change of t shirt for after the race.

Shoes can and come off in the mud.  Make sure that they are tightly laced using all of the lace holes and many athletes use duct tape over the laces and under the sole.

Good luck for the winter.
