Apologies this arrived a few weeks ago, but I didn’t see it.

Hi all, it looks like you all had a fantastic winter xc season well done to all the regulars and the new rising stars. Just to keep you all up to date with Daniels progress. He has had back to back track seasons and has been tired at times with adjusting to the heat some days running in 38 celcius heat. His new club Glen Huntly have been brilliant and his new coach Mixine Corchran has been very understanding and is just like a female version of Noel. She has managed to maintain Daniels form and he has been consistenly running 2.02 or so he manged a seasons best of 2.01.54 at the Olympic Stadium in Melbourne where they hold the Grand Prix meets. Its amazing to be running in a former Olympic Stadium. However thankfully the winter season is soon upon us and I am, hoping Daniel willi knuckle down to some serious training. He runs with a couple of sub 1.50 guys who have taken him under their wing and trains with Kellie Hetherington a 2.04 girl who Laura may meet in the future. Just to name drop a little we have the former Irish middle distance runner Sonia O’ Sullivan as member of the club. Just to also say thanks to the club and chris and bernard (god not united again!!)for the kind donations for the Santa fun run donatios the childrens hospital has been delighted. Well all the best just to let you know we always check out the web site to see whats going on and hope all is going well. Dan will miss the bunny runs but hear winter rarely gets below 10 degrees celsius. Oh how we shall suffer.

At a recent committee meeting we discussed some improvements to the training squads and would welcome parent’s views on the subject.

For a couple of years we have wanted to create a squad in between young athletes and the specialist squads. This is in line with advice from England Athletics and allows young people to continue with a range of disciplines before they specialise. It also avoids them over training at a time when they are growing significantly. This fits in well with the young athletes league where athletes are encouraged to try different disciplines in competition.

We are also aware that when all squads are at the track there can be a lot of people on the track at one time. This means that the young athlete group never get a chance to run on the straight for instance and can restrict long throws.

The proposal is therefore to move the young athlete group to a new time slot of 6pm to 7pm on Mondays with children starting at age 8. The existing intermediate squad will continue on Mondays at 7pm with a start age range of 10/11 years old. In addition there will be a new intermediate squad on Wednesdays from 7pm.

Paul and Christine would appreciate any comments before plans are finalised. Start dates will be publicised but will be after the Easter holidays when some of the existing young athletes will also be invited to move to the intermediate squad.

At this time of year there are fell races every weekend for juniors plus some evening ones as the nights get lighter. I won’t put all of these on the website so the places to look are www.bofra.co.uk and http://www.fellrunner.org.uk/. If you plan to run on the fells regularly then both organisations are worth joining. I will try and point out races where I know a number of club runners will be attending, otherwise ask any of the fell runners down at the track.
