The fell running summer season is now in full swing despite the weather. You need to keep your eyes peeled for suitable events or ask Paul or one of the fell runners. Last week there were two races on Tuesday night, one on Wednesday, two on Saturday and a big club event on Sunday; all fairly local to us.

The races that I know Pendle folk were running at were:

Tuesday was at Mearley Clough starting from the Calfs Head at Worston. A senior race to the Pendle plateau and back plus pasta supper in the pub. Highly recommended by Paul and Sarah, and is open to over 14s. An under 16 girl won the ladies race!

Wednesday saw a race from Kildwick organised by Keighley and Craven. This has some great junior races from under 8 upwards but no Pendle juniors this year.

Saturday saw the start of the Bofra season. These are very traditional fell races, some dating back to Victorian times. Typically quite short but very steep and technical, always have junior races www.bofra.co.uk.

The weather wasn’t great for Sedbergh gala but stayed dry for the races albeit very wet underfoot. Ruby Schofield came 3rd girl in an under 12s field of 51 runners. Next race is a classic at kettlewell in wharfedale and normally attracts some Pendle runners. All ages, including juniors, should note that some Bofra races will now mandate windproof jackets and maybe overtrousers if the weather is poor. All ages above under 12 had to carry a jacket for the first time at Sedbergh. You are recommended to take them to every race!

On the same day there was the inter counties fell running champs at Settle Hills. In this prestigious event James Marchant represented Lancashire, and the team won the U16 boys race. Former club member Declan Bulmer was also running for Lancashire at an older age group.

This week sees the Jack Bloor relays for adults on Wednesday night and various adult races at the weekend. See www.fellrunner.org.uk for details.

Next week there is the popular Killington Sports on Thursday night for all ages. This is a traditional lakes/howgills sports evening and hasn’t changed much for the past 100 years. A bit of a run out but worth it for the experience. Track races if you don’t fancy the fells, but the track is grass, not flat and races are measured in yards. By the way they are also handicapped! Always a few Pendle folk who take the trouble to go up, starts at 6pm and is somewhere behind Killington lake services on the M6, but check the map well first.

Mid Lancs League – Preston

Saturday 18th May 2013

Not the best of days to take part in athletics – the weather was dull, dreary and damp
and cold but our Pendle athletes put 100% into their events given the
atrocious conditions. It was an exceptionally long day for some, with
the male Javelin cut short due to the time, but we saw 6 PB’s and a
Pendle Club Record broken.

The day started with Alan Plumb and Zac
Child throwing the Shot and Hammer in a slippy wet circle followed by
Alan throwing the Discus. Alan gained two first positions and a second
with Zac getting a third place in the Hammer both gaining valuable
points for the Club.

Josh Ingham had an outstanding day knocking just
short of 4 seconds off his PB in the 400m and 5 seconds off his PB in
the 800m finishing in first position – great running Josh.

Kai Atkins also had a great run at 800m gaining himself a PB.

Other outstanding performances came from Matthew Thompson and Thomas Marchant, our 1500m
boys, finishing strongly in first and third positions both gaining PB’s
– Noel must be very proud of you all.

Daemon Metcalfe, Natrika Wildman and Timmy Barnes did some great high jumping gaining a first position
and two second positions respectively well done to all three of you.

Newcomers to the Mid Lancs League were Adele Ogden, Sam Taylor-Bolshaw
and Michael Taubman. Not the best day to make your debuts but you all
competed well and we hope the weather hasn’t put you off competing
again ! Sam was his heat winner of the U15 100m and Adele got third
position in the U17 Women’s 800m gaining 7 points for the ladies – well
done Adele.

Athlete of the day has to go to Leah Hillman who came
first in the Discus and Javelin and second in the Shot Putt but more
importantly got a PB in her Discus with a whopping throw of 31.27
breaking the existing Pendle Club Record of 29.86. Brilliant throwing
Leah, it is a shame your climbing skills are not as good !

At the end of the day the Pendle men ended in 5th position in Division One and the
Pendle Ladies in 6th position in Division Two.

Let us hope that the Great British Summertime has returned by the next Mid Lancs Meeting at
Lancaster on the 15th June !

Youth Development League

First Fixture – Saturday 4.5.13

Stockport

Pendle Athletes did us proud at the weekend in the first YDL Fixture at
Stockport. Not only did the regular athletes turnout but it was also
nice to see some new faces competing for Pendle, some for the first
time.

The day got off to a showery start but soon developed into
another glorious sunny day.

The athletes could compete in up to three
events plus a relay, giving several of them the chance to try something
new.

Athletics is not just about winning events, it is about personal
achievements and being part of the Pendle team, gaining valuable Club
points.

Several athletes achieved personal best times on the day,
around 14 in total, the Thompson twins, Matty Barnes, Kai Atkins,
Daemon Metcalfe, Sophie Garner, Gregan Baker, Thomas Marchant, Rebecca
Leeming, Natrika Wildman to name but a few !

There were also a few
newcomers to competing who have now set themselves season best times to
try and improve through the course of the season so well done to Laura
Harvey, Amber Saunders and Jamie Oldcorn. It may seem quite daunting
competing for the first time away from our home club but we hope they
enjoyed their day and will look forward to seeing them again at the
next fixture.

We managed to field four relay teams, just missing out
on the U13 girls so if there are any U13 girls wondering whether to
give competing a try you would be made more than welcome – it is a fun
day out with friends.

At the end of the day, Pendle Athletic Club
finished in 2nd place (437 points) behind Dash Athletic Club (714
points) closely followed by Colwyn Bay Athletic Club in 3rd (434
points). Three points in it – you can’t get closer than that !!

The
next YDL Meeting is on the 1st June at Litherland Athletic Stadium.

So
a big well done to everyone!

Photos from Saturday are on the Pendle AC
Facebook page – this is a closed group so only members of Pendle AC
have access to view them. If you are not a member of the group yet you
will need to search for Pendle AC and request to join. If you are
friends on Facebook with any existing members they should be able to
add you.

The first meeting in the new league for U13 and U15 athletes is at Stockport on Saturday, 4 May. We have booked a 33 seater coach which will leave the track at 8:45 a.m. The last event is at 5.00 p.m. so we anticipate being back at Seedhill around 6:30 p.m. It is preferred that athletes use the coach so that their events can be finalised whilst we are travelling. There are usually spaces for those parents who wish to travel on the coach. The cost to hire the coach is £280.00 and to use the coach, £5 per person but families will not be asked to pay more than £15; this includes the competing athlete’s fee. Club coaches have been asking their athletes if they are available for the meeting, please can you let your coach or Chris know as soon as possible.

Our endurance coach enjoying the sunshine.

Saturday
27th April 2013

Blackpool Mid Lancs Athletic Meeting

Last Saturday
saw several Pendle Athletes take part in a fabulously sunny day at
Blackpool Mid Lancs Athletic Meeting.

There was a slightly chilly
breeze but we managed to secure a sheltered pitch at the head of the
track where the athletes had a panoramic view over the stadium to watch
and support the day’s events.

First up was Alan Plumb who secured two
first places with Discus and Shot and came second in the Hammer Throw
with a magnificent PB of 38.53 – well done Alan.

Our runners had a
great day seeing lst place positions for Matthew Dutton in the 800m
U17, Darius Boardman in the 1500m U17 and Matthew Barnes in the 1500m
U15.

Also some fantastic running from Joe Lonsdale in the 100m and
200m, gaining 2 PBs, Luke Thompson having a very challenging finish
with Matthew Barnes in the 1500m to come 2nd with Matthew Thompson
coming in 3rd in the 800m with Josh Ingham getting a 3rd position in
the 1500m with a PB.

Kai Atkins in the U13’s had a fantastic run
coming in 2nd place with a PB.

On to our jumpers now. Timmy Barnes
gave a fantastic performance in the High Jump U13 equally the Club U13
record of 1.40m. Daemon came 2nd in the U15 Boys High Jump with a
staggering 1.55m giving him a PB.

In the Long Jump Natrika Wildman had
a great jump with 4.38m coming in 2nd place and Spencer Phelan came in
4th position with a jump of 3.72m.

Now on to our Throwers – apart from

Mid Lancs Track & Field League Stanley Park, Blackpool 27 April.

The first meeting is this coming Saturday. The league is open to Male and Female athletes in the U13 age group(those athletes whose 11th birthday falls on or before 31 August this year)to seniors. Unlike the Youth Development League and the Northern League, where only two members per event can represent the club, in addition to the counters, six non-counters may run in track events, one non-counter in High Jump and three in the other field events. Athletes can compete in three events and usually they have the opportunity to compete events of their choice, especially on the track.

The season starts this Saturday at Blackpool. Entry on day and you need your own transport. Details on http://www.midlancs.org.uk/

The order of events is mid lancs order.

For younger athletes who haven’t competed before then the young athletes league in a couple of weeks is a great place to start. Ask your coach for details.
