Following the Olympics we have loads of new members and Club membership is at it’s highest for a number of years.  This is great news, but we really need some additional helpers including some who are prepared to train as coaches.

Tonight we had three parents genuinely volunteer to help out and perhaps go onto gaining an initial coaching qualification.  The Club will pay for the training and the courses are good fun and well organised by England Athletics.  There are a variety of qualifications but for most starting out you would go for Coaching Assistant.

Initial training is just one day and there is no exam, people who demonstrate willingness and basic aptitude pass.

The commitment is what ever you can give.  The number of coaches being able to coach 4 days a week is very limited, most of us can manage one evening session per week, with some other commitments taking precendence.  If we have a pool of Coaching assistants the load can be shared.

If you are training yourselves then Paul’s Intermediate group has a need for adults to run with the youngsters so you also get a work out.

Please talk to Paul or Christine and we will have a look for courses.  If you don’t feel able to commit to being a coach, then adult helpers are always welcome, especially during the winter both inside for sports hall and with the intermediate and endurance squads outside.

The penultimate race of the summer was on Sunday at Embsay near Skipton.  The rain just about held off but the fields were quite muddy.

Not so many Pendle runners this year but results so far are on www.bofra.co.uk including championship tables.  Congratulations to club coach Sarah who has won the U23 women competition.

The last race of the series is at Wasdale in the Lakes.  A long journey but an outstanding venue for all age group races.  Let’s hope that Paul doesn’t get lost this year!

That’s just the first part of the climb for the seniors – the top is well in the clouds.

The final race of this series was on Saturday.  Fell results are on http://www.felljunior.org.uk/PennineInter/.

Congratulations to Ruby Schofield who has won the U12 girls title. Matthew Barnes won the under 14 boys with Thomas marchant coming 4th.

Report and photos from Richard Marchant:

I was down at the track as early as 7.00am erecting the gazebo and unloading the barbeque in the steady drizzle. I was saddened to see weeds in the terraces, the half painted fence and the bins that hadn’t been emptied.

However the athletics turned out to be compelling, the weather favourable and the Thai curry was just the ticket for many people, (only one person asked for a hotdog) for the annual Pendle Open.

The results will be available shortly, but I would like to thank everyone involved in staging this event – in particular Paul Wilson and Christine Chorlton, the starter, track referee, field referee, time keepers, track judges, all parents who acted as officials, St Johns Ambulance, the track staff and kitchen staff without whom this event would not be possible.

Finally – I would like to thank all athletes who participated in this 33rd Pendle Open because you helped make my day and I guess many other people too.

Tips of  The Day

1. Alison – don’t shout for your favourite athletes whilst officiating trackside.

2. If you enjoyed the curry, I’m taking orders.

A very busy fell running weekend came to an end with the fifth consecutive day of racing at reeth showin swaledale. This was a BOFRA championship junior counter and the 100th Reeth Show.

A few club members made the long trip and had a good day out in remarkably good weather.

Thomas marchant came 3rd

From Richard Marchant:

The only thing  that was damp over there was the weather, the spirit of our Pendle Athletes was  brilliant and brought bright spells to the day’s events.  Not sure of all  the times and performances but I do know a few pbs were set in the 1500m.   It was a smoothly run meeting as usual and everybody had a good day out.

Results should be on http://www.traffordac.co.uk/ but site down at present!
